About the Islands
-
Oahu is the most visited of all the islands. It is most famous for its volcano, the now dormant Diamond Head and the famous Waikiki Beach. Close to Waikiki is the USS Arizona Memorial, which commemorates the service men and women who died on December 7th, 1941 during the attack on Pearl Harbor. If you enjoy shopping, and haggling over the cost of your purchase, the International Market Place has one of the largest assortment of shopping available.
-
Maui is the second most popular island and the Kaanapali Beach is considered one of the island’s best beaches. This beach stretches four miles and is dotted with hotels and open-air restaurants. Ten minutes south of Kaanapali is Old Lahaina Town which was once the original whaling port. It now enjoys boutiques, galleries, and eateries along Front Street.
-
Hawaii, the “Big Island” is most famous for its active volcano, and Volcanoes National Park, located on the east side of the island. The Kohola area of Hawaii offers a long stretch of coffee farms. The coffee plants bloom in the springtime and ripen to berry red in the fall for the Kona Coffee Fest. The island of Hawaii is also the only island with black sand
beaches.
-
Kauai, the oldest of the Islands, receives about 300 inches of rain during the rainy season (Nov to Mar). This island has become a favorite of honeymooners and others who relish the quiet life.
Buildings can be no taller than a mature coconut tree. You might want to visit the Fern Grotto, which is accessible by boat down the Wailua River. This natural grotto is a popular attraction and site for wedding ceremonies.
-
Lanai was once the island plantation for the Dole Company, who grew pineapples from the 1920’s until the early 1990’s. The island has only two resorts, both considered luxury. The Lodge at Koele is located about 30 minutes from the water, and the Manele Bay Hotel. The Manele Bay Hotel, a Mediterranean-style resort, is set on the red cliffs above Hulopoe Bay, a wonderful spot to snorkel. Service at both resorts is unabashedly British in style. They offer riding stables, sporting clays, archery, four-by-four excursions, sportfishing charters, catamaran sails, and visiting artist programs. The island is wide open for exploring, from Shipwreck Beach on the northeast shore to nesting turtles on Polihua
Beach.
