In 1801, a stream of lava swept down the slopes of Mount Hualalai, miraculously sparing the beautiful ancient site where Kona Village Resort now stands. On 82 acres, 125 individual thatched hale offer guests a choice of picturesque garden views, tranquil lagoon settings or dramatic ocean panoramas. The water in the lagoons is brackish which eliminates most of the mosquitoes and bugs. The hales on the north side are built on the 1801 lava flow.
